You might think I lost all hope at that point. I did…
The boy with the irrational nickname, the boy who had a story to tell, and not just any story- Life Of Pi is the story of a boy open to unlimited possibilities just like the limitless ratio of pi.
Pi is put into a situation where everything dear to him is taken away harshly. He has to learn to function outside his comfort zone- something that we as humans find hard to do. When life corners people, they either give in or give up. Lost at sea, on a little boat with a Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker, there’s not much he can do, except count the days. Pi chose to give in and surrender to what life had to teach him. As every layer of the story is peeled off, we see the many layers of the Ego unfolding simultaneously. When nothing is left, he humbles himself, turns to God and thanks him for the experience.
When I thought God was indifferent about my sufferings, He was watching, and gave me rest.
The magnificent floating carnivorous island seems like a dream come true at first for a famished and almost dying boy, but it paradoxically symbolizes both salvation and temptation. He is provided with sufficient food during the day, but during the night, the island digests everything in it! How very like the nature of life, where balance is the key to living it. The tiger is a metaphor of fear. Ultimately every person has to confront their fears so that they can reach their true self.
Eventually, when Pi is washed to an island where he’s rescued, Richard Parker whom he’s grown to be attached to walks away without looking back and Pi although devastated, understands the impermanent nature of life.
I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.
A grown up Pi narrates this adventure to a writer who listens open mouthed. He also tells him a much more realistic story and then asks him which one he believed. The writer chose the one with the tiger. Piscene Molitor Patel smiles and says,
Thank you. And so it goes with God.
In life we have all been given free will. So how would you rather have yours- one with no miracles or one with limitless possiblities?
The movie’s visuals surprises us with the eerie calm of the ocean reflecting the vast sky, the glowing underwater creatures, and of course, Richard Parker makes us doubt if he is animated or just a really well trained tiger. Tabu was graceful as always, Suraj Sharma amazed us with his emotive skills and Irfan Khan proved he is a great story teller.
My rating for this movie 5/5

Actually the Tiger was both real and animated. At close counters animated, and solo shots real

I enjoyed the book but was frankly quite disappointed with the movie. Firstly all the characters were terribly miscast and didn’t fit in with my idea of who they all were. And the movie really dragged and in the end I really wished they had all drowned ( I actually felt motion sick with all the rocking and rolling)
