MY SHAGGY COMFORT

She sits by herself, all alone

But she’s there for me when I’m sullen and low

I talk endlessly, she listens- patiently

She knows when I’m happy, she knows when I’m sad

And gives me the feel of a caring hand.

When I cry, when I hurt,

She wipes my tears as I pour out my heart.

Holding me close and hugging me tight,

In her own silent way she tells me it’s going to be alright.

When I’m happy she rejoices with me,

I can feel the warmth in her closeness to me

Through tears and joys we make our way

Me and my companion never will sway

Lying there faded, my blanket of old

Even without a life, I can feel that heart of gold.

  1. Like a child holds on to a teddy bear and gets emotional comfort from it, I guess the blanket gives the same comfort to pour one’s heart out. Quite an emotional poem.

  20. I fell in love with the way you described your love affair with your blanket. My brother had a blanket that he used right from birth till he turned a teen and then my mom finally threw it away because he carried it everywhere. He is 40 now and still misses it (doesn’t say it, but I know he does). Thank you for writing such a lovely poem…brought back memories. Keep writing.

  32. I am forever a blanket person. I feel blankets possess a unique essence or life force. Our bodies instinctively crave protection in order to completely relax and fall asleep. Also, we were most likely wrapped in a blanket during infancy, and tucked under a blanket as a child. Blankets and sleep have been companions before we can remember.
