Gummi Bears

They were getting a tad impatient, waiting. Every few minutes the little girl couldn’t help but tug at her muma’s dress and ask when it would arrive. Very soon, muma would say each time and together they continued to peer out the tall lavender grilled window. It was just after she came home from school. She had hurriedly gotten out of her uniform, cleaned up and had finished her lunch without fussing. Even the salad.  Her muma smiling through this the whole time, was thoroughly amused.

A faint ringing in the distance made them both jump in excitement. Surely, it must be here? And certainly enough, they saw the mailman arrive on his blue bicycle, grinning ear to ear. He had a package for them. She scrambled behind her muma out the big brown door. After exchanging the usual pleasantries, muma took the package and he went on his way, the bell on his bicycle tinkling.

They brought the package in and she watched as muma took the big red scissors from the kitchen to cut it open. She squealed in joy seeing the huge packet of gummi bears. Chuckling, muma knew she couldn’t wait any longer.

In the huge white living room they sat, comfy on the sofa with pink cushions. The packet of gummi bears was open and placed on the laminated coffee table in front. Muma had a plate with some of the gummi bears and they knew what to do. She would devour the red and orange ones and muma would eat the green and yellow ones. Her legs dangling down the sofa, with a glance now and then at muma, she continued to enjoy her afternoon after school, eating gummi bears with muma.

Years later after she grew up, every time she picked a packet of gummi bears but didn’t have muma to share them with- she’d first sort them into reds and oranges, yellows and greens, because duh.. that’s the way they were supposed to be eaten.

Aww, Muma would approve eating them that way. This would be a scene in my home too, only between both my kids. 🙂

When I was younger I ate a rainbow of Gummi Bears all together at once, and was sick for days!
